Painting S 65 headlight case

Postby petergay » Thu Dec 07, 2006 7:43 pm

Hi y'all,

I have a '65 Honda Sport 65, got as a derelict and restored about 10 years ago. The lower part of the headlight case cracked, and the metal bit that the headlight mountin screw screws into vanished. Inspection revealed 3 cracks around the screw mount boss. Epoxy failed as a repair.

Ordered a replacement from Western Hills Honda, and got their "last one." My S65 is white, and they sent what they thought was correct. It wasn't - being either yellowed with age, or cream color for some other machine.

Polishing with various degrees of abrasive polishes revealed that the cream color permeated the plastic.

The plastic is soft, soapy, flexible, and very smooth.

What adhesive will bond the cracked original parts back together?

Failing that, is there a flexible paint that will adhere to a very smooth surface, and stick while flexing?

The part in question is 61301-036-000A.

Thanks for any assistance.

Pete.

Peter-

I know there are plastic welding services that are available....I just had a guy repair a sidecover for me that was in poor shape. I am totally unfamiliar with the process, but my guess is that a good auto body shop technician could give you some ideas. I know that I use a glue called Zap-a-Gap on styrene and other plastics that holds well, but can become brittle after time. My guess is you would want to use some sort of bonding agent that can then be sanded so the crack disappears and then you can easily spray on your paint of choice.

Hope that helps!

A picture would help. Some plastics can be repaired with a solder gun and filled with a flexible e-poxy. There are several different products for adhesion on plastics and paints.
